Williams and Blackman Depart Batwoman Over Editorial Interference

Last night, J.H. Williams III, writer and artist on DC's Batwoman, posted on his blog he and co-writer W. Haden Blackman will be leaving the highly-praised title due to editorial conflicts. Their final issue will be Batwoman #26. In the series, Batwoman a.k.a. Kate Kane is set to marry girlfriend Detective Maggie Sawyer. This is where the conflicts seems to arise.

Here's an excerpt from William' post where he details the problem:

Unfortunately, in recent months, DC has asked us to alter or completely discard many long-standing storylines in ways that we feel compromise the character and the series. We were told to ditch plans for Killer Croc’s origins; forced to drastically alter the original ending of our current arc, which would have defined Batwoman’s heroic future in bold new ways; and, most crushingly, prohibited from ever showing Kate and Maggie actually getting married. All of these editorial decisions came at the last minute, and always after a year or more of planning and plotting on our end.

You can read the post in its entirety on Williams' blog. You have to wonder about the argument against showing same-sex marriage. We've seen it before with Kevin and Clay in Archie Comics' Life With Archie #16 and Northstar and Kyle in Marvel Comics Astonishing X-Men #51. I was happy both occurred, but obviously that's not a wide-spread sentiment.

I've spoken highly of this book several times on Twitter. Of the few DC books I read, Batwoman has been one of my most-anticipated each month. Williams and Blackman have penned an incredible journey for Kate Kane, who's sexuality hasn't been the whole of her character. The writers have expressed an authentic portrayal of lesbian characters while avoiding the gimmicks, which ironically have plagued some of the other New 52 titles.

The book also stands out on a visual level. I can't say enough how much I've enjoyed the unique layouts used throughout the run thus far. The tag-team effort of Williams, Amy Reeder, Trevor McCarthy, Pere Perez, Rob Hunter, Walden Wong, Sandu Florea, Richard Friend, Francesco Francavilla, Guy Major, Dave Stewart, and Todd Klein have given gorgeous life to the adventures of Kate Kane and her supporting cast. I didn't look up the names of everyone involved, so the rest of those names were lifted from the blog post.

It's been just over two years since DC Comics relaunched nearly the whole of its universe, dubbed the New 52, in an effort to cut down on continuity and spark new readership. As expected, it was a move met with much skepticism. Questions surrounded many decisions made since the beginning. It seems DC Comics has Twitter on fire just about every other week, and usually not for positive reasons. One need only look at the portrayal of Catwoman in her solo series and as well as Starfire in Red Hood and the Outlaws to get an idea of why fans are upset. This new controversy is another battle in the war of creator vs. editor at the long-running publisher. Those have included George Perez leaving Superman, the firing and re-hiring of Batgirl writer Gail Simone and the public feud involving Rob Liefeld.

With the writing team's last issue still months away, we likely won't hear who'll be taking over for some time.

I'm not one to say they're trying to mess up, but even I'm left scratching my head looking at the decisions made. We know you can't please everyone with every move you make, but there are many odd activities going on at DC. What's your take on all the problems? Let me know.

Comic Cover of the Week: Mama Said Knock You Out

Happy New Comic Book Day! Hey people, new books are here. With so many good books from different publishers, it's a great time to be a fan. Oh yeah, I hear there's some kind of convention starting today. That means awesome events, lots of people, cool costumes, a beautiful city and good food. If you made the trip to SDCC, I suggest finding your way over to Gaslamp Pizza for their BBQ chicken pizza. While I won't be in San Diego this weekend, I'll be keeping up with news from the show.

From the beginning, Batwoman has been a gorgeous book. Led by J.H. Williams III, the adventures of Kate Kane have been drawn by multiple artists including Amy Reeder and Trevor McCarthy (current artist), and has never missed a visual stroke. Williams has provided readers with what could be said as some of the most unique layouts in comics. Here, the perspective is what caught my eye. Batwoman's fist meeting someone's face is pure fun. Whoever says superhero books are all the same has not read Batwoman. It's not too late to rectify that.

Comic Cover of the Week

Happy New Comic Book Day! This is a big week for comic book and video game fans. Monday kicked off E3 2013, we have new comics and Friday sees the world release of Man of Steel. E3 has been as awesome as expected. There has been a lot of gaming announcements; some expected and some unexpected. Check back later as I'll be increasing the gaming content on CBL beginning with some E3 news.

As for Superman, I've seen mixed reviews on Twitter and other sites. It's well known I am not much of a Superman fan but I want the film to succeed. So this will be an interesting weekend on Twitter and news sites as everyone will be rushing to voice their opinions.

Jumping back to comic books, here is Rafael Albuquerque and Dave McCaig's cover to American Vampire: The Long Road to Hell #1.

This image sticks out immediately due to its color scheme used by McCaig. While the amount of red is minimal, the color always carries a certain weight. The bloody katana and teeth suck (couldn't resist) you in. You can't see much detail of the character, but you can feel the rage. And yes, it's well documented the katana is my favorite weapon, so Rafael gets extra points for that.

I've been behind on this series, but enjoyed the third trade which included the American Vampire: Survival of the Fittest mini. If you pick up this one-shot, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Comic Cover of the Week (1-23-13)

Browsing this week's releases left me without an eye-catching cover image. Now the good news. The show must go on, so I'm switching it up for this week. Instead of presenting you with one cover image, I'm giving you five. But of course I have to give it a twist. So here are five covers showcasing awesome female characters.

Astonishing X-Men #58 by Phil Noto

The Shi'ar warrior featured here is Warbird. Here's a relatively new character who's been receiving a lot of attention not only in this book, but also in Wolverine and the X-Men. Warbird is no stranger to Comic Cover of the Week and she's certainly welcomed back.

Cobra #21 by Antonio Fuso

Yo Joe! Though the book is named after the criminal organization, the overall focus is on a small team of Joes. One of whom is Ronin. Who doesn't love a lady with a sword?

Batwoman #16 by J.H. Williams III

If there's anything you should know about this book it's the amazing visuals that Williams has provided. Here, we see what Batwoman and Wonder Woman have been up to during their team-up.

Winter Soldier #14 by Daniel Acuna

Black Widow. She's one of the deadliest WITHOUT powers. Cool character drawn by an amazing artist. Natasha's stock has risen exponentially thanks to mainstream media focus from her appearances in the films Iron Man 2 and Marvel's Avengers. Sidenote: this is Ed Brubaker's final issue on the title and it's a memorable one. I highly recommend it.

Uncanny X-Force #1 by Olivier Coipel

This final piece drawn by Coipel, who I would certainly love to be doing more ongoing work, features two of not only my favorite X-women, but also favorite characters in general, Storm and Psylocke. Joining them are the six times as deadly Spiral and newcomer Cluster. Spiral has not been seen in a while, so it'll be interesting to catch up with her. If you caught the solicit not too long ago, you were probably wondering who the female Fantomex was. That question was answered at the end of the previous Uncanny X-Force series.

This part may or may not seem confusing but if it does, don't worry, it happens. Fantomex had three brains: one being the Fantomex we've come to know and love, a second being this version known as Cluster and the last one who is a not-so-nice fella. Fantomex died during the "Final Execution" arc. He was brought back at the end of that storyline which was also the end of that book. During his resurrection, his brains were separated and placed into their own bodies. You still with me? Okay, well that's where Cluster comes in and here we are. The final page of this book caught me, and I'm sure many other readers, by surprise. I'm definitely looking forward to the second issue.

Comic Cover of the Week

HAPPY NEW COMIC BOOK DAY! Here's to another great week of comics. Among the books I'll be bringing home is BOOM! Studios' Extermination #8. This is the final issue in a fun, but all too brief series. Another comic you'll no doubt be hearing about is Batgirl #16 by Ed Benes.

Ed Benes. What more can I really say? Well how about he's an amazing artist. One who's quite familiar with Batgirl. There's sort of a light and dark dynamic to this image. With a creepy smile connecting the halves. That and the different eyes really make this a terrifying image. And that represents the overall story quite well.

I had the opportunity to meet the talented artist at San Diego Comic Con 2011. It was his first U.S. appearance as well as my first trip to SDCC. Hopefully, we get to see his name on more books.

Book of the Week for 10-24-12

Happy New Comic Book Day! And Happy Halloween as well. Before we get to some comic book goodness, I just want to send some love to our friends on the east coast as they deal with a force of nature which has already claimed lives and done massive amounts of damage. We're sending well wishes your way.

As usual, before I reveal the best read, I'll go over the other comics which found a home in my collection. Amazing Spider-Man #696, Astonishing X-Men #55, Avengers #32, AvX: Consequences #3, Captain America #19, Gambit #4, Invincible Iron Man #527, Punisher: War Zone #1, Secret Avengers #33, Invincible #96, Spawn #224, Cobra #18, Extermination #5 and Ghostbusters 100-Page Spooktacular. Sadly, I'm behind on two of those titles, so their newest releases were not read and thus did not qualify. It happens.

My favorite read of the week came from DC Comics. That's pretty rare considering the quality of the New 52. I have to give it to the creative team behind I, Vampire #13. Joshua Hale Fialkov, Andrea Sorrentino, and Marcelo Maiolo have been doing quality work. I'm reading nine DC books and this one is near the top of the list for consistency. I have no doubt that it's one of the better books of the New 52.

This issue is a game-changer. If you've been reading, you've seen how the book has progressed through the first 12 issues. Credit to Fialkov for the overall tale and the characters. The events of the previous issue left Mary, formerly Queen of the vampires, powerless. This issue begins with the focus on her settling into life as a human. She reveals aspects about vampires that I can't say I've ever come across before. As the book progresses, Andrew comes back into the picture. This transition is where things change and you'll want to jump on board to see how.

Visually, Sorrentino and Maiolo work well together. I've already mentioned the consistency this title has brought. That extends beyond the writing to Sorrentino's pencils. Maiolo's colors add that sense of darkness and mystery. His shadows serve the book well. There's a two-page spread where Mary is just sitting in a chair. That may not sound exciting, but the image conveys a lot about the character's current state. It appears she's dwelling on her new role. It's simple, but powerful.

This is going up late, but even though Halloween books are here, I still wanted to post it. And let's be honest, it having been out a week doesn't make it less of an entertaining read. Now get out there and buy some books. Happy reading and thanks for looking.

Book of the Week

It was a big week in comics. Surprised? Of course you aren't. I picked up a good amount of books and it was good reading all around for the most part. The books that found a home my collection were Avengers #31, Avenging Spider-Man #13, AvX: Consequences #1, Invincible Iron Man #526, Scarlet Spider #10, Secret Avengers #32, Uncanny Avengers #1, Wolverine and the X-Men #18, X-Men #37, Batman #13, Green Lantern Corps #13 and G.I. Joe #18.

The comic book reading world seems to have reached a consensus and I have to agree. Batman #13 is a damn good read. Easily recommendable. Everything about the book lives up to the hype. The return of Joker is certainly better than expected and it's all unexpected. This may be my favorite Scott Snyder Bat-book. The back-up feature co-written by James Tynion IV just adds to the value of the book by showing the set-up of an event occurring later in the book. And the ending? I didn't think I'd ever see that. This is going to be BIG. You can believe the good reviews are spreading and more people will be looking for this issue as well as the next.

But this isn't all about Snyder's writing. The artists are on point again. Greg Capullo, Fco Plascencia and Jonathan Glapion turn out another good looking issue. Capullo's storytelling can stand on its own if necessary. Not only did this book get my vote for best read, it also got my cover of the week for the art team's very slick cover. Jock, who's certainly no stranger to the Bat-universe, joins co-writers Snyder and Tynion as artist for the back-up.

If you've been curious about Batman, this is definitely the time to jump on. This is also the beginning of a huge crossover spanning multiple books, Death of the Family. I'm pretty sure you'll want to be around for everything that transpires.

What did my fellow readers think of Batman #13? I have yet to come across any comments from anyone displeased with this issue. Any comments always welcome. Thanks for looking.

Cover of the Week

Hey comic readers, New Comic Book Day has come and gone but the fun doesn't have to end there. And fun it was. I got some great stuff, which you'll see shortly. On to the matter at hand. That is Greg Capullo and FCO Plascencia's slick die-cut cover for Batman #13. Check it out.


Once you flipped Joker's stretched out skin, it reveals Batman's always cheery mug. It's just a good looking cover that brings back images of many 90's comics. I remember seeing complaints about Capullo's work at the start of this series. I didn't understand it because I liked what he was doing issue after issue. This cover only adds to what he's brought visually to the number one Bat-book since the New 52 began.

Lots of readers have been curious about what the Joker has been up to since his earlier appearance. I can't wait to read it. The response from the twitterverse has been nothing but positive. That's pretty much expected because this is definitely one of the better DCnU books.

Comic and Action Figure Haul

Another new comic day has come and gone. That doesn't mean the fun ends though. Here's my haul for the week. I had some good books waiting for me and also some surprise action figure pick-ups. I did miss out on Ultimate Spider-Man #15. That's my own fault because I haven't updated my pull-list in a while. I expect Daredevil #18, Cobra #17, and Ghostbusters #13 to be the best books of the week. I'm quite curious to see how Ghost #0 reads. I'm a bit behind in reading, so I won't know too soon.

 

I also hit up a Wal-Mart (one which hasn't been friendly to collectors of cool action figures) to find Marvel Universe wave 19. It's always nice when you can catch a full wave in one spot. It doesn't get any better than that. They were acually restocking that night, so I caught a fresh case. Check out wave 19 below.

 

The figure I was looking forward to most in this wave was She-Hulk. She's had some recent appearances of which I was fond. When I pick up my books this week, I'm going to see if I can order some trades from her last solo series. I'm curious how she holds her own. I know a few people who are still searching for Kang and Scarlet Witch. Good luck to them.

The paint apps are good for the most part. Punisher and Future Foundation Spider-Man have some questionable spots though. I was thinking about touching up both of them. The problem area on Punisher isn't that bad. FF Spidey's are a bit different. I'm not sure if Hasbro wanted his costume to have a more grayish look or shaded effect as opposed to the Marvel Legends Future Foundation Spider-Man which is pure white and black. Looking at it makes me think of art by Mike Deodato Jr. I happen to like that, but it didn't translate well. But then again, it could just be bad paint application. Toy collectors are quite familiar with that. Here are a few pictures to see it for yourself.



Well that's that. Of course I'll be picking up my books this week, but I'm also hoping to find Marvel Universe wave 18. Yeah, I missed a wave. How? I'm still not sure. That wave consists of Beast (in Astonishing costume), Beta Ray Bill (hell yeah), Hulk (new sculpt), and Kraven. Also in that wave are two versions of Ultimate Spider-Man. One of which is the Miles Morales variant. I don't want Ultimate Spider-man though. But I do want two of Beta Ray Bill as I'll be keeping one MOC.

Cover of the Week for 8-29-12

Technically, it's New Comic Day, but we're going to turn the clock back a week just for this post. But come back later as I'll be back up to speed. Things have been going sort of fast, so let's slow it down with Flash Annual #1. Wait...I don't think that works. Well, here it does.

I'm not a big Flash fan, but I'm a big fan of Francis Manapul's art. For this Annual issue, the story incorporates the Rogues and we get a taste of that on the cover. The aspects that stand out are how Manapul places Mirror Master in the subtitle and that alone with the ice. Well done.

Welcome to my reveal for cover of the week. Since I've been doing these weekly posts, there have been several surprise winners. A lot of picks have come from books I haven't or wouldn't touch. Such is the case with today's winner. Let's greet Green Lantern: New Guardians #12.

When Tyler Kirkham took over art duties on the previous Green Lantern Corps series, I had never heard of him but I was glad he did. I definitely like his work. You get a taste of that on this cover depicting GL Kyle Rayner on his knees. He's being held in place by energies of five of the various Corps. When used with more vibrant colors, the power of the different Corps can really pop. Green Lantern: New Guardians is a good example. As stated, I like Kirkham's art and I've been meaning to check for any other books he's worked on.

I think it's time for a little art appreciation. Well hello cover of the week, glad to see you again. What do you have for us this week? Batman #12, huh? Excellent choice. Take a look my friends.

Greg Capullo has provided some good visuals on this book. And this cover is definitely near the top of the list. I haven't read it yet, but this is supposed to be the epilogue to the Court of Owls (finally that's over). I don't really know what the cover symbolizes. All I know is Batman is catching some lightning action and it looks amazing. FCO Plascencia's colors make the cover really pop. Beautiful piece.

Cover of the Week

Recent days have been busier than expected, but the show must go on. Things appear to be slowing down meaning these weekly entries will resume their regular Wednesday schedule. It's only proper to start New Comic Day that way. So let's get to it.

A couple books stood at the top of the list. It was a tough choice, but we're going green this week. I'm thinking about the environment here people. This is only the second DC Comics cover to walk away a winner. Take a look at Birds of Prey #11.

You gotta give Stanley "Artgerm" Lau his due. His art is just beautiful. I believe I first came across his work during the previous Batgirl series which actually was the reason I decided to pick it up and I grew to love it. Steph Brown, I miss you. So I am definitely a fan and had the chance to meet him at SDCC in 2011.

For this lovely cover, Artgerm makes Poison Ivy the center of attention with the BoP team entangled in her plants. This book has been one of my favorite DCnU titles and I look forward to it every month.

Book of the Week

Well hello fellow comic fans. Thanks for joining me again in this weekly celebration of comic goodness. Despite how it seems, the world of comics isn't always about controversy. We do enjoy our books greatly and that's what we're here to do right now.

Finding a home in my collection are Amazing Spider-Man #688, Spider-Men #2, Wolverine & the X-Men #12, X-Men Legacy #269, X-Men #31, Gears of War #24 (final issue), I Vampire #10, Justice League #10, Witchblade #157, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #11. I didn't get my hands on the Fatale Vol. 1 TPB, but it's okay. Overall, it was a good week of releases.

But of course only one book can come out on top. And surprisingly, it's a DC book. I never thought I would've saw that. It's not that I hate DC. Obviously, I don't or I wouldn't spend my dollars on them. But their books don't always connect with me as Marvel and Image comics do. I know how that may sound, so I'll put it out there that I don't read them expecting them to be of lesser quality than other books. I give all books their fair shot. That even included New 52 Action Comics and Superman. Both of which turned out to be trash, but you know, I gave them their chance.

Onto a more positive note, my book of the week is I, Vampire #10. Joshua Hale Fialkov and Andrea Sorrentino's series is, in my opinion, one of the better books post-relaunch. Let's see what "Waiting for the end of the World" has in store for readers.

In the previous issue, readers were left with two notes. One of those is Andrew taking on anyone who would challenge his control. Who took that challenge? Mary of course. The second of those points is the introduction of the Van Helsings. Whom, according to the cover of this book, are the ultimate vampire killers. In this issue they descend upon Andrew, Mary, and their band of loyal bloodsucking followers.

At one point in the book, Sorrentino opens up Andrew and Mary's fight and he shows out. It's a beautiful two-page spread where Mary has transformed into a giant beast with Andrew still looking like well, Andrew. Cool glasses and all. But that's not all. In the background, the pages are broken up into 20 panels showing the flow of the fight. While some of it obstructed because of the figures in the foreground, it's still something to behold. His work is complimented with Marcelo Maiolo colors giving it a darker vibe. They're a good pair, especially fitting for this book.

I, Vampire has a lot of good qualities. At the top of the list for this particular issue is the discussion of morality between the Professor Troughton and the leader of the Van Helsings. The talk of morality revolves around Andrew and Mary's "struggle" for power and the Van Helsings basically murdering anyone getting in the way of their mission.

If you haven't been reading I, Vampire, you should check it out. It's only getting better and the cliff-hanger could lead to disaster for our protagonists. So my friends, that's my book of the week. Spaceman #1 Review

I remember about Spaceman the day it was released and reading tweets about it being only $1 and at least worth trying. My shop didn't have any left or didn't order any left. Either way I couldn't get my hands on a copy. After that though, I never heard anything else about the series. That was until I found this first issue when I visited a new shop while doing some travelling.

Brief sidenote: whenever I travel, I always check for the closest comic shop. I take pictures of the storefront and buy something to support our shops. The only times I've never purchased anything was from a shop that didn't really have many comics left as they were pretty much a gaming shop.

Back to Spaceman. I had no idea what this book was gonna be about. But I'll try out a lot of books and for $1, what do I really have to lose? Well in this case, I only lost the time it took to read it because I didn't like it. I really didn't. I couldn't wait until I could put the book down.

I didn't care for the story of this genetically engineered being man sent into space and all that. I wasn't feeling the art either. This one just isn't for me.

Cover of the Week

Happy New Comic Day! I have a lighter week of releases and I'm okay with that. I'm doing this all from my phone, thank you droid. It's a little later in the day than I usually post, but no worries. The cover to I, Vampire #9 stood out amongst the other releases this week.

Here we have a cover from Andrea Sorrentino. I don't have much knowledge of this artist, but I like this cover. That should be obvious considering it's the topic of conversation. There's quite a few things going on wth this cover. The integration of all the pieces is real slick. First I like the fanged figure taking up all of our attention. The hands reaching up definitely caught my eye. Are they reaching up for our new favorite vampire? Maybe. I'll know when I read the book. I have been reading this series and it's been good.

Thursday Thoughts - New 52 Edition

Hello hello comic fans. Another new comic day has come and gone. I've been catching up on some New 52 books and looking at my pull-list. I've trimmed some fat on there during this first half of 2012 and made a few more cuts very recently. Many of these changes are from the DC section. So for this week I decided to dedicate my Thursday Thoughts to the DCnU. Here we go people.

1. The Superman books both suck. I read both for a few issues and had to end that quickly. My thinking was ok, here's the New 52, maybe they'll make Superman interesting. I gave him an honest chance. Well several technically. Two titles and a couple issues of each. But they just didn't do anything for me.

2. Speaking of the Superman family, Supergirl's book is much better. I'm really liking the writing and the art. I can't wait to see what they have in store for Kara down the line.

3. I just dropped Green Lantern. I let it go on for too long. I wasn't enjoying anything about the book. I don't really care for Hal Jordan and while Sinestro can have some badass moments, for the most part, it's not mindblowing. I've really only been reading the title because I like the idea of the Lanterns. But I like John Stewart and Guy Gardner so much more. They should get more attention than Hal and Kyle.

4. I kinda want this Night of the Owls stuff to be done. I'm torn on the whole subject. I wasn't digging it at first, then I got into it. But then it kept dragging on and now I'm tempted to drop the books involving the story and pick them back up after this story is done. It has however seemed to have amped up a bit. I know for sure that I won't be reading any books that I'm not already reading. Not happening.

5. I've read some of the previous Birds of Prey series and have enjoyed most of what I've read. When it was announced that the team would be apart of the New 52, it was automatic that I'd try it. It's been good. I've been a fan of Black Canary for a bit but she's been easily outshined by Katana and Starling. They're the stars of the series.

Cover of the Week

Happy New Comic Day! We're a few days removed from C2E2 and I'm sure everyone who hit the show is still adjusting to "normal" life. I have class, papers, and tests coming up so my re-adjustment period was real quick. But that doesn't mean we can't have fun, right? Right.

I was tempted to choose one of the Amazing Spider-Man covers because of the slick depictions of Sandman doing his grainy thing. But I opted for the Kryptonian flygirl. So this week my pick is Supergirl #8. Take a look at one of my favorite DC Comics characters.

George Perez is filling in as artist for this issue. I'll be honest and say I've never liked his art. It just doesn't appeal to me. But I'm not here to trash his work, that's not my style. I chose this piece because I like how Supergirl is trapped inside of the Silver Banshee's body. It's just a cool look. This series is one of the better DCnU books in my opinion. I can't wait to get my hands on this book to see what the new Silver Banshee is like.

Head on out to your shop and pick up Supergirl #8 along with whatever amazing books you're reading. That's what I'll be doing in a short while. Keep celebrating comics my friends.
